Where is Johnson City on the Texas Hill Country map?

Johnson City is one of the easiest central Hill Country towns to learn by highways. U.S. 281 runs north–south through town and U.S. 290 runs east–west. Their junction is the anchor. Blanco is down U.S. 281 to the south; Stonewall and Fredericksburg lie west along U.S. 290; Dripping Springs and the Austin side of the Hill Country lie to the east.

The Pedernales River provides the physical geography. A long-running stream gage on the U.S. 281 bridge is about a mile northeast of town, so Johnson City belongs directly to the Pedernales corridor even though the courthouse square is not sitting on the riverbank.

Johnson City was created in a county-seat fight

The town’s location is tied to local politics. Residents living around the Pedernales in central Blanco County considered the old county seat at Blanco inconvenient. James Polk Johnson helped promote a new settlement on land he owned, and a post office was established there in 1878.

Early attempts to move the county seat failed. Johnson City kept growing anyway. In 1890, after another contested election, it finally replaced Blanco as the county seat. That explains why a relatively small town sits at such an important road junction: Johnson City was deliberately built to be a more central civic hub.

The LBJ connection—without the common map mistake

Johnson City is inseparable from Lyndon B. Johnson, but he was not born here. LBJ was born in 1908 on his family’s farm near Stonewall, west of Johnson City. His family moved to Johnson City in 1913, when he was five, and the town became the setting for most of his childhood.

Today the Johnson City unit of Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park includes his Boyhood Home and the Johnson Settlement. The ranch, reconstructed birthplace and Texas White House country are farther west near Stonewall. Learning those two locations is useful in the game: Johnson City and Stonewall are related, but they are not the same dot.

Why Johnson City is such a useful anchor

Johnson City links several parts of the map. Follow 290 west toward Stonewall, Luckenbach country and Fredericksburg; follow 281 south toward Blanco or north toward Marble Falls; move east toward Dripping Springs. It is less visually famous than Fredericksburg, but it is arguably one of the most structurally useful towns for learning the central Hill Country.
